The 'academic' style is probably the one that seems the hardest to get together - but it is really about just telling about something as it is - with reference to how others might back up or disagree with your message (these are the things that you can quote or paraphrase using the Harvard style which is in the Handbook). A rule of thumb might be to use a couple of quotes or paraphrases for a small bit of writing, but this is really dependent on what is being said in the piece of writing.
I think the academic style is often modified in the workplace, but it is useful because it relays information very well... plus people don't have to all sound the same. There are some good examples that have been signposted on tutor blogs - have a look for inspiration.
Hi Paula, I actually finished my first draft of my academic style two weeks before Christmas, but I saved it on to my USB as I had one more referencing detail to edit, when I tried to open the file it was corrupted which means I could not view the work. I have to start it again, to top things of my laptop broke the day after so I have had no access to the internet to comment on others blogs, I’m a little worried but I’m going to try and complete it by today so hopefully I can get some comments.
